ORDer, ORDer!

Most people who learn about Chicago’s airport code are confused as to why it is ORD.

Chicago’s premier airport used to be called Orchard Field before it was renamed O’Hare to honor local Medal of Honor recipient Edward O’Hare, the navy’s first flying ace during World War II.

The first two letters of the word ‘Orchard’ and the last letter of the word ‘Field’ make up the term ORD, which is commonly used but never taken advantage of since it’s so unusual and maybe even complex.

Enter Grab, a brand that has brought some order to confusion about that airport code with a brilliant play on the term ORD.

Interestingly, they managed to make it a verb (ORDer) as Google and Uber have successfully done with their own brand names.

I passed by many ads at the O’Hare airport, but this was the one that stood out the most and nearly made me ORDer a drink I hadn’t planned to.

Takeaway

The smartest brands see opportunity and order where others see confusion and chaos.
