The internship

How companies handle internships often reveal their real approach to marketing.

Since I began my career in marketing 15+ years ago, I’ve seen interns and internships at multiple levels in marketing.

This excited me about marketing as a career as I was enamoured by how companies gave newbies chances at the highest level.

In fact, I realized that other departments rarely adopted internships as frequently as marketing did.

I’ve rarely seen serious internships in finance (close to the money), assisting the CEO (protecting his time), or in fundraising/advancement (engaging donors/investors).

But I’ve seen interns with zero experience leading the marketing efforts of brands.

I then realized that when it comes to matters that companies regard as sacred and protect religiously – C-suite’s time, investor interactions, and ultimately money – companies won’t let interns touch them with a 10-feet pole.

It’s because very few companies know much, regard highly, or care enough about marketing to demand that it be handled with expertise.

Takeaway

What you’ll not trust with an inexperienced intern is likely what you value the most.
