The fleece test
Wed, Aug 05, 2020
In 1184 BC, God convinced Gideon to lead the Israelites against the invading forces.
But the marketer in Gideon wanted to A/B test before he began his campaign.
The Bible explains (in Judges 6:36–40) how Gideon wanted to be doubly sure that the Lord would be with him in this fight.
That night, he placed some wool fleece outside and requested the Lord for a miracle.
He prayed that if in the morning the fleece was covered with dew but the ground was dry, then he’d know that the Lord would save Israel.
His prayer was granted.
The next night, Gideon prayed again, “Do not be angry with me. Let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew.”
God granted the reverse prayer, too.
Convinced by the data from his pilot tests, Gideon had the faith to lead his men forward.
And sure enough, in the next chapter, we read how Gideon and an army of just 300 soldiers achieved a miraculous victory.
Stop arguing and start testing.
Takeaway
- Always A/B test to shape your assumptions.
- Then double test to validate your assumptions.
