Genius in a bottle

This week I’m pouring out a three-part series on Coca-Cola and how it has kept the world thirsty for more.

And I think a fitting way to start it off is by revisiting this post I wrote last year.

In 1888, Asa Candler became the majority shareholder of Coca-Cola, who celebrated its 135th birthday last week.

His dream was to make the bubbly drink America’s number one cola, but it began losing its fizz when other colas popped up around 1915.

To win the cola war, he held a national design contest for a new Coke bottle.

He thought that if Coca-Cola could invent a unique bottle, customers would be able to distinguish it from the other cola brands.

Fizz hit the fan when the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, IN, pitched their design – a bottle in the shape of the cocoa plant.

Although cocoa had nothing to do with Coke, the glassmakers won the contest for their unique design.

There’s no other bottle like Coke’s.

The shape of the bottle should have nothing to do with the taste, but it really feels like it does.

Takeaway

Who said it’s only what’s inside that really counts?

What do you feel when you grab a bottle of Coke to drink from it? Let me know here.

There'll never be any revolution. Humanity has bartered it for Coca-Cola and cable television.
