Surprise price
Thu, Apr 08, 2021
One of the best pricing lessons I’ve learned was taught by a handyman.
To install knobs and handles for our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, we scouted handymen who had great reviews and prices.
While most of the handymen charged an hourly rate, one surprise quote was ‘$2 per drilled hole’.
I had to sit down to do the math.
We needed around 75 holes, which would cost about $150.
That was roughly about the cost of 4 hours of work for the other handymen.
Since I charge based on value for myself and not on time spent, I decided to take a chance with the bold pricing of this handyman.
I thought it would be an easy job to drill two holes and clamp handles to the cabinet doors but boy was I wrong!
He took almost 5 hours, which meant that his price was a win-win for both of us.
His pricing strategy ensured that I instantly knew what the job would cost, unlike his peers’ quotes that were dependent on how fast or slow they were on the job.
This handyman priced out his competition with just four words!
