Dinosaur marketer

My son Caleb turned 4 this month, so we had a dinosaur-themed birthday party for our little T-Rex.

The T-Rex also happens to be his favorite dinosaur, so we had balloons of various kinds of T-Rex.

In this picture, it looks as if one T-Rex is about to destroy and eat the other, while the latter is busy looking backward and trying to catch its own tail.

It reminds me of the modern marketing landscape where marketers are no different.

On the one hand, we have marketers innovating while staying true to the fundamentals by being louder, faster, and in the faces of their prospects.

They’re quickly eating up old-school marketing and old-school marketers.

Then there are marketers who chase vanity metrics (their own tail), go around in circles, and don’t see the new breed of T-Rex who’s already nipping at their heels.

We all have expiry dates, but the T-Rex that looks at its tail and goes around in circles will be extinct far before the one who’s hungry for more.

Takeaway

If you don’t make yourself obsolete (extinct), someone else will.

Which of these two dinosaurs do you have on your marketing team? Click here to drop me a note.

The best marketing strategy is to destroy your industry before your competition does.
