JFK and Janitor Jim
Mon, Feb 17, 2020
Jim had no idea that a chance encounter was in store for him that day, or that his story would be retold forever.
The long-time janitor was cleaning the floors at NASA when he heard a familiar voice, “Hi, I’m Jack Kennedy. What are you doing?”
Jim immediately knew it was the man who promised to put a man on the moon. The president of the United States of America was at NASA that day to inspect preparations for the lunar exploration.
“Well, Mr. President,” the janitor responded, “I’m helping put a man on the moon.”
Jim’s quick reply convinces me that he may have been the greatest marketer that a president ever met.
Why?
Between 1960 and 1973, the US spent around $28 billion to make that giant leap for mankind. No other president had dreamed of going this far or dared the treasury this much. Jim’s reply reassured President John F. Kennedy that his investment was worthwhile, the nation was with him, and the game was on.
This story is often retold to teach belief, teamwork, and ownership, but it’s also a great example of eliminating buyer’s remorse.
As we celebrate President’s Day today, ask yourself these questions to help you make a man feel like a president!
P.S. The name Jim and the story is admittedly hearsay. But when you hear what Jim said, it’s worth repeating the rumor and respecting Jim (or whatever his name was!)
Remorse: beholding heaven yet feeling hell
Takeaway
- Are you hunting down opportunities to engage your constituents and negate buyer’s remorse?
- Have you prepared your team (from top to bottom) to be ready to kill buyer’s remorse?
- If today, the president asked you what you do, what would your one-liner be?
