Distance v Displacement

If you go north for a mile, then west for 3 miles, south for 2 miles, east for 4 miles, north for another mile, and west for one last mile:

Q1: What distance would you have covered?

Q2: What displacement would’ve happened?

A1: You’d have covered a total distance of 12 miles.

A2: You’d be back to your starting point with a displacement of 0 miles.

Distance and displacement set apart the masterful marketers from the mediocre ones.

The masterful marketers invest more time, effort, and energy into creating a specific strategy that they can execute.

The mediocre marketers start with execution and later learn the painful and often expensive lesson that output doesn’t necessarily equal outcome.

Why?

Because distance is a scalar quantity, while displacement is a vector quantity!

This means that while both are measured by the same unit (miles), distance misses out on an entire dimension – direction (or strategy, in our case) – which makes a whole world of difference.

Takeaway

Identify and minimize the activities that cause you to traverse long distances but result in minimal displacement.

Measure and share if you’re just covering distance or actually displacing something!

Distance is the journey. Displacement is the result.
