Persuasive websites

The first website went live almost 30 years ago, but today’s websites are being made as if it’s still 1991.

A recent website audit threw up a surprise for a client of ours.

On being asked about the biggest source of traffic to their site, they confidently said it was direct traffic from their radio show.

However, their Google Analytics data confirmed that organic search (39%) trumped direct search (28%).

Their entire website was built for someone who knew the brand, not for someone who stumbled onto their home page from a Google search.

The first website was built in 1991 as an information-sharing tool. Sadly, we still think of websites that way.

Today’s websites need to be persuasive for the uninitiated rather than just be informative for the uninformed.

Know the primary driver of traffic to your website as well as your website’s primary beneficiary, and design a persuasive website around them and their needs.

Takeaway

Not all prospects – first-time or returning visitors – are created equal.

Treating them differently makes all the difference.

If you don't know who your customer is, you don't know what quality is.
