Output v Outcome

The Texan snowstorm last month showed me a kid’s take on the difference between output and outcome.

In fact, this difference is often the chasm that separates the best from most.

Our electric service provider had asked us to conserve power and water as the rolling power outages were not enough to keep up with the demand.

In order to preserve electricity amid multiple power outages daily, I asked my 3-year-old to turn off the lights in his room.

“I don’t need to,” Caleb replied without flinching.

“When the power gets cut, the lights will turn off automatically.”

He was right.

Technically, his thinking would’ve gotten the job done, but not for the outcome I had in mind.

Technically, the error was mine.

I had relayed a clear instruction but not the Commander’s Intent.

This difference is the foundational step that helps people develop extreme ownership.

Takeaway

Every output has an outcome that triggered the need for that output.

How do you communicate the outcome so clearly that the output is fruitful, not just taken care of? Share your thoughts here.

Communication sometimes is not what you first hear, listen not just to the words, but listen for the reason.
