Hand of God

Maradona, one of the greatest soccer stars, died yesterday leaving behind a legacy that was marred by a moment.

It was 1986 and Argentina was playing England in the FIFA World Cup.

Maradona appeared to have headed a ball into the English goal post and England immediately cried foul.

Though the goal was given, replays showed that he had used his hand to score it.

Prima donna Maradona then referred to it as “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God”, which earned that goal the label – the hand of God.

Two months later, Maradona acknowledged that he had ‘handled’ the ball purposely and knew immediately that it was an illegitimate goal.

Due to this incident, very few recall the second goal that Maradona scored just 4 minutes after the ‘hand of God’ goal.

Maradona dribbled past more than half the English side on his own and slid a superb goal past the goalie to sink England.

Even after 52 years, it remains one of the best goals ever to be scored in a FIFA World Cup quarterfinal.

Takeaway

People often have to recall the incredible, but they’ll easily remember the infamy.
