Our wants are needy

Caleb, my 3-year-old, is a creature of habit.

Every morning, he wakes up and comes to the living room with his blanket and his plush toy, Bluey.

He then sits on the couch and holds both of them tightly for 15 minutes.

Recently, I told him that he didn’t have to bring them to the living room in the morning.

“No, I need to,” he shot back.

Sure, there’s apparent comfort in sticking to his environment on waking up, but his ‘need’ stems more from habit (driven by want) than necessity.

Most of us often confuse what we want with what we need.

This affects our buying behavior because we’re often irrational with our emotions and illogical with our purchases.

Our aspirations and fears often make us think that our wants are our needs.

Takeaway

Almost all of us, including Caleb, are creatures of habit.

To get us to comply, consume, or contribute, just convince us that we want your offering and we’ll soon translate those wants into our needs.

What’s something you think you need but is really just a want? Tell me about it!

You cannot always have what you want. Sometimes you get what you need.
