The non-marketing problem
Thu, Jul 02, 2020
In the last two manna, I’ve talked about why both HR and marketing departments have a marketing problem.
To cap off this mini-series, I’m zeroing in on one department that never has a marketing problem – sales!
I ask people, “When you buy salt from the grocery store, is it because they marketed to you or because they sold you on it?”
Often, the answer is, “They sold me on it.”
I then ask, “How did they sell to you? Did they pursue you deeply? Offer a discount?”
When was the last time you saw an ad on TV from a salt brand that really stimulated your taste buds?
How is it then that you probably still trust and buy the same salt brand every time?
Most salt companies get us with their marketing and their product, but we often give the credit to sales.
The real problem is that we often don’t know where marketing ends and sales begins.
Sales is one of the hardest jobs on earth, but without marketing, sales would be even more hard.
Make a customer, not a sale.
Takeaway
- A lot that we attribute to sales is often due to marketing and vice versa.
- Knowing the difference makes all the difference.
Can you tell me at least one key difference between marketing and sales? Drop me an email – I’d love to know.
