The marketing problem

Yesterday, I talked about how HR has a marketing problem.

But HR is not the only one.

Guess what? Marketing has a marketing problem, too!

I was recently asked, “What’s the difference between your marketing agency and other marketing agencies?”

I said, “Most marketing agencies are advertising agencies because most marketing plans can be summed up in two words – Facebook advertising.

We’re a marketing agency.”

When prospects ask us for help with ‘marketing’, I’d ask, “What outcomes are you hoping for from this campaign?”

Almost always, they’d say, “More sales!”

I’d then ask, “If you wanted sales, why ask a marketing partner for help?”

Marketing will help sales but is not sales. They both have interconnected functions that are distinctly different.

Knowing the difference makes all the difference.

Peter Drucker nailed it when he said that marketing’s aim is to know the customer so well that the product sells itself.

You have to tell a story before you can sell a story.

Takeaway

If you want to sell well, first embrace marketing to know your customer better. Then sales will follow.
