HR v Marketing

The Human Resources (HR) function has a marketing problem.

But HR often doesn’t realize that.

While HR and marketing serve the company differently, treating them as disconnected departments means that HR may lose out on the perks of cross-pollination and borrowed concepts.

HR would be more fruitful if it treats its employees the way marketers treat their users.

If we take care of our employees, they’ll take care of our customers.

Likewise, if we evangelize our employees, they’ll evangelize our customers.

The most common phrases in employment contracts are:

  1. You must not
  2. You will not
  3. You cannot

Replace them with the following firm beliefs that will uplift your employees to further uplift your brand:

  1. This is your company too
  2. We’d love it if you could
  3. You’re always encouraged to

Marketing is too important to be left to the marketing department.

David Packard

Takeaway

  1. Your unleashed marketers are in your marketing department.
  2. Your untapped marketers are in all your other departments.
