Daddy Cool
Mon, Jun 22, 2020
Yesterday, on Father’s Day, I remembered a marketing lesson my toddler taught me when he was 2.
Whenever Caleb and I accomplished a small task, I’d ask him the rhetoric question, “Is that cool or what?”
Often, his response was “What?” ??♂️
I thought he was just acting smart.
Later on, I realized that he said ‘cool’ when the weather was cold and ‘what’ otherwise.
Soon, he learned about the weather and started responding correctly, but the lesson was not lost on me.
I could’ve realized this a lot earlier had I just asked him one follow-up question.
Good marketers know that what people say is important.
Great marketers know that why they say what they say is even more important.
As marketers, we must never stop asking.
If I keep asking, I’m sure I’ll learn a lot more lessons before Caleb turns 4!
Communication sometimes is not what you first hear, listen not just to the words, but listen for the reason.
Takeaway
- Are you hearing the words they speak?
- Are you listening to what they’re saying?
- Are you comprehending what they mean?
