Boss baby

Can you guess what word my 1-year-old says the most?

It’s not that she doesn’t know other words.

It’s that often, she just doesn’t want some of the things that we offer her without knowing what exactly she wants.

So when we ask if she wants this thing or that thing, she says:

“No.”

Till we get to asking her exactly what she wants and she says “Yesh.”

She isn’t being stubborn.

She just knows exactly what she wants.

Rather, more often than not, she knows what she doesn’t want.

There could be a lesson in it for us when we see these babies seem like bad bosses as they repeatedly refuse our offers.

Today, we may be grown up, but our mind often responds the same way as a baby does when people ask us if we want things.

We say NO more than YES, because when offered the option to buy something:

  1. We may not really be thinking about buying
  2. We may not want to buy at that point
  3. We may want to consider other alternatives before committing to the purchase
  4. We may want to discuss with friends, peers, etc., before buying
  5. We may want to discuss with a significant other before buying
  6. We may want to buy right then, but don’t have the money to
  7. We may want to buy and have the money, but it’s just not a priority
  8. We may be extremely happy with what we have now
  9. We didn’t like something about the person who offered us something new
  10. We may have some other reason not to buy when offered something

In short, it’s far easier for us to say NO, than to say YES.

Takeaway

Know that you’re selling to a species that is used to saying NO far more than YES since birth.

Have you faced a lot of NO’s when you were selling to people? Do share!

The oldest and shortest words, “yes” and “no”, are the ones that require the most thought.
