The most dreadful question

As the CEO of a marketing company, I dread one question more than any other – and I was asked just that recently.

I’d just connected with someone on LinkedIn.

I’m not sure if he got a chance to check out our website, but he broke my heart when he asked, “So, what does your company do?”

If he didn’t check our website, it’s fine.

But if he did, and still needed to ask that question, then “Dallas, we have a problem!”

If anyone sees our website and still asks what we do, then our marketing team is not giving the right answers.

My heart broke all the more because we are a marketing company, and if we can’t simplify our message enough to preemptively avoid that question, we aren’t practicing what we preach.

I answered him satisfactorily, but I’ll be reviewing this learning with my team to make sure this isn’t asked again.

Takeaway

  1. What’s the one question you dread? And how are you going to avoid it being asked?
  2. Will people have to ask you “What do you do?” even after checking your website?

Tune in tomorrow for a follow-up question you need to be prepared for as well.

You should learn from your competitor, but never just copy. Copy and you die.
