Speaking media

An interview I took of a social media ninja revealed how many of us view social media.

He was explaining what he did as part of his company’s social media activities and was rolling off some metrics when I asked:

“So what happens if you don’t post anything tomorrow?”

“Then we won’t have any message to share with our community.”

“And what if you have nothing to tell them for a few days?”

“Our likes, comments, and shares will decrease.”

“What’ll happen then?”

“People will lose interest in our #brand on social media and no one will want to listen to us again.”

“If you just wanted to tell them stuff, why didn’t you blog about it instead of being on social media?”

I never got an answer to that question.

Most of us think social media is just another platform to tell people what we want instead of using it to listen and know our prospects and customers better.

Takeaway

It’s called social media, not speaking media.

Don’t waste your time there if you’re not willing to listen and engage apart from sharing your thoughts.

Are you social or just sharing away on social media? Click here and let me know.

It's a dialogue, not a monologue, and some people don't understand that. Social media is more like a telephone than a television.
