Last week, Caleb’s question about marketing literally left me speechless.
“Dad, what exactly does a marketer do?” he asked, very interested.
As I tried to explain the answer to him, I realized I was struggling with 2 issues:
- Most of my responses were answers to the question “What does a salesperson do?”
- I realized that all my responses would have been met by a “What does that mean?” from a 4-year old.
If I can’t explain what a marketer does to a 4-year old with a single and simple answer, what good am I as a marketer?
Takeaway
Most of us marketers are marketing without really knowing or being able to explain what marketing really is!
How would you define what a marketer does to a 4 year-old without mentioning sales? I’d love to know!
