The United States or America
Tue, Jan 26, 2021
If you could rename the USA today, what would you call it?
As America faces its biggest internal crisis in 150 years, the ‘United States’ reveals a lot about how countries are named.
The USA is not the only nation to have ‘United States’ in its name.
Officially, Mexico is the United States of Mexico (or the United Mexican States).
In the past, these regions have all had ‘United States’ in their names but removed it over time for various reasons.
- Belgium
- Brazil
- Central America
- Columbia
- Indonesia
- Ionian Islands
- Saurashtra
- Stellaland
- Travancore & Cochin
- Venezuela
The ‘United States’ had greater meaning in 1776 and will prevail in the long term even if there’s some disunity now.
But if you could rename it, what would you call it?
Naming is neither pretty nor permanent sometimes, be it for brands or countries.

What will your brand name be 20 or 200 years from now? Let me know.
