Young Turk

There is a young Turk in town and his name is Türkiye.

At the start of this year, the nation Turkey reverted to its original name –Türkiye.

One of the few countries to be located on multiple continents (both Asia and Europe), Turkey realized that its original unique name was better, given its amazing history.

And that it didn’t want to get slaughtered as a country by Thanksgiving jokes anymore!

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced an official rebranding last month, saying, “The phrase Türkiye represents and expresses the culture, civilization, and values of the nation in the best way.”

While the change is minimal, I appreciate Turkey making the change to reflect who it truly is.

If only brands thought the same as this wise nation and focused on ensuring that their brand name truly reflected who they are, rather than the name someone assigned to them or a name that describes what they do!

I could have named my son ‘Lego Builder’, but I named him Caleb.

I wanted his name to reflect who he is (or who I’d like him to be like – the Canaan conqueror mentioned in the Bible) rather than what he does – builds Legos day and night.

Takeaway

What’s in a name? Lots!

If you asked 100 people in your target market who didn’t know about you whether your name was good, average, or bad, what would they say? I’d love to know!

I read in a book once that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but I’ve never been able to believe it. I don’t believe a rose WOULD be as nice if it was called a thistle or a skunk cabbage.
