Marketing role

Last week we reached out to our networks for a marketing role that we’re trying to fill.

But we couldn’t bring ourselves to create a boring job description.

How could we hire for a marketing role without marketing that role first?

So by doing the following, we created a new approach for our prospects to get to know us and consider working with us:

  1. We replaced a job description with a job conversation – We made the entire web page a conversation between us and the prospect instead of the usually boring monologue we see on job profiles.
  2. We didn’t let them apply easily – There was no ‘Apply’ button. We raised the bar by asking them to be creative and figure out how to apply if they were interested.
  3. We only provided context and content – Anything that could be Googled or found on our website was not on this page because we know that they can do that easily.
  4. We didn’t use jargon – We wrote from the heart to connect with other humans who decided with their hearts, not just with their heads.
  5. We were ok with being vulnerable – Instead of starting with how we were a great company, we were honest and explained how we badly needed help.

Takeaway

We marketers must be ashamed of the hypocrisy in hiring for marketing roles without doing any marketing to promote them.

I’d love to get your feedback here about our process in hiring our soon-to-be marketing coordinator.

P.S. I’d also love it if you take a look at this role and forward it to anyone in your network that might love this role.

Engagement has to be human, because people trust people more than brands.
