Delivering happiness
Mon, Nov 30, 2020
Tony Hsieh won’t be around to reap what he has sown.
The iconic CEO of Zappos passed away last week but left a lasting legacy of truly ‘delivering happiness’ – which happens to be the title of his famous book.
Tony went against the norm by sowing the seeds of a completely different company culture at Zappos.
He first marketed a different attitude of service to his employees.
He hired well, encouraged them to learn new skill sets, and promoted them faster than usual. He then replaced the middle management layer with a form of self-organization called holacracy.
Zappos soon became known for its great service and then as a service company that happened to sell shoes.
As if this endorsement wasn’t enough, Tony then repeated what he had sown when Amazon bought Zappos for $1.2 billion.
Tony insisted on staying on to ensure that the behemoth left Zappos (and its unique corporate culture) to itself.
What Tony really left behind is a lasting legacy that we will all reap.
What Tony delivered is true happiness.
