Message v Magic

What does a Christmas card really contain?

Every December, my family sends out Christmas cards to family and friends.

Last year, since we’d just relocated to a new community in Frisco, TX, I decided to drop off some cards at the homes of new friends in the neighborhood.

One of my neighbors and his son had contracted COVID-19 in November, so I dropped off a card there too to help lift their morale during a gloomy year-end.

Two weeks later, he told me that he got hundreds of online greetings via email, text, etc., but that he got only two greeting cards by mail and mine was one of them.

He said that the two cards meant so much to him that they were both on his refrigerator. He also said that he and his family had decided to start sending out Christmas cards every year from now on.

Indeed, there’s something magical about getting a handwritten note in a digital age.

Takeaway

Digital cards send messages instantly to many. Handwritten notes create magic, meaning, and memories.

What will you send next time? Share your thoughts here.

Sadly, e-mail has triggered the decline of the handwritten note; I have seen its near-disappearance in my lifetime.
