Genius in a bottle!

In 1888, Asa Candler became the majority shareholder of Coca-Cola, who celebrated its 134th birthday last week.

His dream was to make the bubbly drink America’s number one cola, but it began losing its fizz when other colas popped up around 1915.

To win the cola war, he held a national design contest for a new Coke bottle.

He thought that if Coca-Cola could invent a unique bottle, customers would be able to distinguish it from the other cola brands.

Fizz hit the fan when the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, IN, pitched their design – a bottle in the shape of the cocoa plant.

Although cocoa had nothing to do with Coke, the glassmakers won the contest for their unique design.

There is no other bottle like Coke’s. The shape of the bottle should have nothing to do with the taste, but it really feels like it does.

There'll never be any revolution. Humanity has bartered it for Coca-Cola and cable television.

Takeaway

  1. Are you impacting your customer at every ‘touchpoint’?
  2. How are you really different from your competition?
  3. Who said cola was just about what’s inside the bottle?
