Coining brilliance
Tue, Feb 22, 2022
This week, I’m going all in on Coinbase – the brand that taught us multiple marketing lessons with one of the most effective Super Bowl ads in a long while!
Yesterday, I wrote a short post about how Coinbase rocked a Superbowl ad without a word of text.
Content doesn’t imply or necessarily need copy.
In fact, I imagine those longer pages of our content are suddenly starting to look silly in the light of Coinbase’s brilliant ad!
But what made it a brilliant ad?
Firstly, and most importantly, it stood out for all the right reasons:
- Marketing v Sales – Most brands use Super Bowl ads for marketing. Coinbase used it for sales. The result? Instant customer acquisition.
- Brand Awareness – Most brands use Super Bowl ads to generate more awareness for their brand. Coinbase made it all about the viewer.
- Action – 90% of drop-offs occur because inspiration is never followed by a clear call to action. The Coinbase ad was all about instructing people to take a clear action and scan a QR code.
When every other brand tried to sing better than its advertising peers, Coinbase did a silent dance.
