Death by 20 minutes

Last week, I caught up with my friend Tim Nations on Zoom.

He shared a story that summed up the current state of the ministry world.

His family was on vacation and was about to board a flight when it was announced that the departure was delayed by 20 minutes.

After 18 minutes, there was an announcement of further delay by another 20 minutes.

You already know where this story is headed!

Four hours after the first announcement came the final announcement that the flight was canceled.

In some ways, the ministry world may be headed on this same journey and possibly to a similar destination.

Here’s how you can avoid common communication baggage that often derails the best of us:

  1. Explain the best, median, and worst-case scenarios so that people are aware
  2. Be very clear, careful, and consistent in your communication at every stage
  3. Always aim to keep the peace by staying patient and persistent

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.
