We bought a zoo
Mon, Sep 14, 2020
Well, we almost had to – just like Matt Damon’s movie by the same name!
It all began a week ago when I was in the car with Caleb, my 3-year old.
I was wrapping up a work call when I said, “Alright, I’ll see you on Zoom in an hour.”
Caleb was playing with his toys, but one keyword clearly cut through the clutter.
“Dad, are you going to the zoo? Who are you meeting there? Can I come too?”
I then remembered the truth that what we say is not always what others hear.
Fast forward to last weekend, when we finally visited the famous Ft. Worth Zoo in Texas (after months of not going anywhere in this COVID season).
Given the sunny Dallas summer, what I ended up buying was ‘sunscream’.
Yes, sunscream, not sunscreen!
Because even though I’ve repeatedly told him it’s sunscreen, Caleb always defiantly insists that it’s sunscream.
The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.
Takeaway
Always know the difference between hearing, listening, and comprehending.
Have people heard or understood one thing when you meant another? Let me know.
