LinkedIn Learning 3: Follower fallacy

Shortcuts are sexy and often like sex!

Everybody wants them and most aren’t ready for what’s next.

Often, you see articles on LinkedIn that showcase how folks got tens of thousands of LinkedIn followers in a year or so.

While it’s great to build a big audience fast and have people engage with your every word, such shortcuts rarely get the point.

The foundation of marketing is to identify, engage, and serve those who need you more than you need them.

None of these blog posts focus on whether such large audiences and you are a good fit for each other.

Over 95% of such audiences will never buy when you sell to them.

It’s far better to have 100 followers who believe in you and act on your word than a million fans on social media who might react to the occasional post.

Jesus changed the world with just 11 people because they truly were his followers and gave up everything for what they believed in.

Takeaway

Changing the world is easier when you’re engaging the few, the faithful, and true followers, not 100,000 people of whom you hope 0.1% will click all the way.

Activate your fans, don’t just collect them like baseball cards.
