Sold or told

Yesterday, I suggested a better option to persuade people – to stop persuading them and to let them persuade themselves.

People in sales and marketing often overlook the very nature of the human mind they’re trying to influence.

And that nature is simply this – humans don’t like to be sold to or told.

When humans feel that they got sold on something, buyer’s remorse kicks in and makes them think that they impulsively bought something they didn’t plan to.

When humans feel that they’re being told or taught or lectured, they resist unless it’s something they’re interested in.

The best way to bypass this filter in the human mind is to:

  1. Find areas of interest that align with your offering
  2. Ensure every conversation helps them learn/get more of what they really love
  3. Sell them what and when they want to buy, not coerce them against their plan

Takeaway

Humans hate being sold to or told. Make sure that what you say, share, or sell is something that they’d:

  1. Love to hear
  2. Be curious to know more of and
  3. Be convinced is a great buy for them

Let me know if you agree with the above points.

Nobody likes to be sold to, but everyone likes to buy.
