Model v Mandate

“Dad, can you come inside this playpen and play with me?”

“I can’t because it’s too small for me.”

“You can. You just need to bend down when you get in,” Caleb explained confidently while crouching down and showing me how to bend.

It’s not like I didn’t know how to bend.

He could’ve just told me to bend.

He needn’t have shown me how to do it, but I realized that’s how the human mind works, even at a young age.

We respond better when someone models an action for us instead of just mandating it.

Children and adults comply better when someone leads the way and shows us how to do something rather than just telling us what needs to get done.

However, I feel this is an aspect that bosses and brands haven’t bent down enough to understand and model for their people and prospects.

We need to stop mandating and start modeling the action that we demand of others.

Takeaway

Actions speak louder than words because seeing, not listening, is believing (that they can accomplish those actions, too).

Do you do what you ask others to do? Do you also model that action for them or just mandate that it get done? Click here and let me know.

A good example is far better than a good precept.
