Confessions of a marketing mind

Honestly, I know nothing about marketing.

At 23, I got an awesome leadership opportunity at a Danish telecom firm to roll out a global VoIP product.

I grabbed it eagerly because I was confident of what good marketing could do.

Plus, marketing was the only thing I ever wanted to learn or do.

At 27, I joined Babson College in Massachusetts for their #1 ranked MBA program in entrepreneurship and read almost every blog post on Hubspot.

Soon I realized that I actually knew very little in marketing.

While graduating, with an additional personal focus on neuromarketing, I realized that I truly knew nothing about the real world of marketing.

I could’ve quickly been demotivated had I not seen the graph below, which renewed my love and longing for learning.

Seven years since graduation, after unlearning and relearning a lot, I’ve now probably learned just 0.1% of marketing.

Some days, I wish I had another shot at that VoIP job!

Takeaway

If you think you know marketing really well, you probably don’t.

Where do you see yourself on this graph, and what’ll you do about it in this new year? Drop me an email and let me know.

Marketing takes a day to learn and a lifetime to master.
