Order! Order!

I’d just pulled into Kroger the other day to fill gas.

Little did I know that my marketing learning would get a refill, too.

A man got out of a really old sedan to fill fuel.

He opened his car’s fuel tank cap first.

He then walked slowly to the pump, swiped his card, input some options on the keypad, removed the nozzle, chose his fuel type, and started filling gas.

Fuel is extremely volatile and evaporates really fast.

But his fuel tank cap was open for a full minute before fueling began.

If he’d changed the order of actions and opened the cap at the end just before fueling, he’d have saved some fuel.

It’s very likely that he always fills fuel this way, thus wasting fuel every time.

Good marketers are always on the lookout to optimize processes and improve results.

The best place to start is our simple habits, which can become game-changers if tweaked correctly.

A habit cannot be tossed out the window; it must be coaxed down the stairs a step at a time.

Takeaway

Are there some sequential actions that – just by reordering – will save you time, money, and energy?

Tell me if you open the fuel tank cap the same way.

P.S. I’ll be switching gears with a 3-part series on marketing magic. Stay tuned and catch part 1 tomorrow!
