A as in Audience

Last week, I talked with a CEO.

It was one of the dreamiest conversations any marketer could have.

He has built a list of over 40,000 leaders in a particularly impressive segment and was discussing marketing options for his brand.

He has also secured a good brand name, and the possibilities seem endless.

However, the icing on the cake is the fact that he first built his audience (in the thousands!) before he had a single offering for them.

Impressively, his team called each one of these leaders personally and listened to them – and verbally onboarded them, too!

This is the kind of project that marketers live for and dream about!

This story reminded me of how Dharmesh Shah blogged on Onstartups.com and had thousands of subscribers (350,000+ today), which served as the launchpad for HubSpot.

I hope this entrepreneur can also 10X his journey and model real marketing!

Never take the audience for granted.

Takeaway

  1. Marketing starts with the prospect. Sales starts with the product.
  2. Start with your prospects and build that audience first so that you can create a product that lasts.

Can you comment and share about brands you know whose audiences were built before their offerings?
