A winning campaign

Yesterday, I talked about the story behind Slurpee.

Today, I want to talk about the store behind Slurpee.

7-Eleven is the world’s largest retail chain with 70,000+ stores across 17 countries.

Founded as an ice house storefront right here in Dallas, TX, 7‑Eleven opened one store approximately every 3.5 hours in 2019!

Named after its operating hours, the retail chain is much loved for its Slurpee and other brand innovations.

Since the 2000 Presidential election, 7-Eleven has run a promotion called ‘7-Election’.

Customers vote by buying special red or blue coffee cups printed with names of parties/candidates.

The cups are scanned at check-out and automatically entered in this unscientific but surprisingly accurate (for all years except 2016) poll.

7-Eleven used this clever campaign to tap into its customers’ emotions about elections – and positioned itself as a winner.

Voting is as much an emotional act as it is an intellectual one.
