C’mon, CMO!

Dear CMO,

You’re often the last person to be hired and almost always the first to be fired.

You’re the one who seems to be doing nothing because intangible is often invisible.

You’re the one who really plants the seeds that will one day convince customers, maybe months after you have left the company.

You often have to explain why you’re not into sales and what the difference is.

You’re the prodigal son to the CFO, who’s much happier with the older son who brings in the sales.

You’re sandwiched between sales and technology.

Your budget is often borrowed, mostly blue.

Very few support you, but many ask how you can make their brands as good as Apple’s or Coke’s.

And as if those battles weren’t enough, you still have to fight the biggest battle of them all – marketing!

Marketing goes wrong when it is perceived by companies as a bolt-on activity.

Takeaway

Thank you, CMO, for all you do. But here are 3 more things you could consider doing:

  1. How can you better tell the stories you’re building?
  2. How can you better tie results to revenues or vice versa?
  3. How can you bridge a better relationship with the C-suite?
