Why marketing fails: Part 3 – Practice
Wed, Mar 30, 2022
This week, I began a 5-part series that will run all week to talk about why marketing fails.
The primary reason is that it fails at the top, which was well stated by Dave Gerhardt when he said, “Life’s too short to work for a CEO who doesn’t get marketing.”
Yesterday, I talked about how many CEOs fail to correctly prioritize marketing activities, ultimately causing marketing to fail.
The reason behind that problem is also the next problem – that most CEOs do not often practice marketing.
If your CEO hasn’t had past experience or practice in running marketing plays, it’s quite often a battle to help them understand the various nuances involved.
Sometimes, CEOs blow their top when they hear that it is taking days to get the right access for the Facebook Business Manager account.
But only a CEO who has lived that life will understand why that is a real issue.
Many CEOs miss out on evangelizing the world with their offering by blogging/vlogging/sharing their thought leadership in their domains.
That’s because CEOs often delegate their content sharing plans or have them created by ghost writers.
If Simon Sinek posted even one of his own LinkedIn posts, he would have seen how Dave Harland’s epic responses to his posts are far more interesting than Simon’s original posts themselves.
But, because CEOs rarely practice marketing – even if it’s just a little bit, they end up missing out on truly living it.
Takeaway
Are you a CEO that practices marketing, or do you have a CEO who practices marketing? I’d love to know!
