Caleb, my 4-year old, was at it again with his questions.
“Dad, is a butterfly made of butter?” he asked very inquisitively.
“No”, I replied, suddenly unsure why a butterfly was called a butterfly.
“It makes no sense. Couldn’t they have gotten a better name?”
He asked the question that I ask when I see most brand names!
I Googled to find out how the butterfly got its name and came across this reason:
“Long ago, Dutch scientists were studying butterflies, and they took a look at their poop. They noticed that the droppings looked an awful lot like butter. So they gave the insect the name butterfly.”
So they had a story, but it was really a #shittystory.
But then again, most brands miss the same opportunity that the Dutch scientists missed with the butterfly – to name it something that evokes a sense of fascination and affection.
Thank God Caleb doesn’t know about the electric eel, dragon fruits, and the like as yet!
